# Haas EC-400 Used Price & Common Problems | CNC Ledger

> Used Haas EC-400 HMC prices ($37,800–$99,500), the high-pressure coolant seal and spindle risks, and a pre-purchase checklist.

**Verdict:** inspect

~$37,800 to ~$99,500 used. Spindle economics match the VF-series ($4,800–$7,200 rebuild vs $16,000–$24,000 replace); the 1,000 PSI through-spindle coolant makes the rotary-union seal a scheduled wear item and a real bearing-killer. Also inspect the pallet changer and 4th-axis for backlash.

**Observed used price:** $37,800–$99,500

**Documented failure risks:**
- Spindle bearing: Haas VF/EC-series spindle economics: rebuild $4,800–$7,200, replacement spindle $16,000–$24,000 before install. Runout under 0.0002" pre-failure is a rebuild candidate; above 0.0005" the shaft may be compromised. Check spindle runout and listen for grinding/whining at high RPM before buying.
- Coolant intrusion into spindle: EC-400PP units run 1,000 PSI through-spindle coolant; high-pressure rotary-union seals are a scheduled wear item and a documented coolant-intrusion path that ruins bearings. Verify seal condition and TSC pressure.
- Pallet changer (APC) & 4th-axis rotary: Inspection point (not independently sourced this pass): on this twin-pallet HMC, check pallet indexing/clamping repeatability and the rotary (B-axis) table for backlash, the pallet changer and rotary are the HMC-specific wear items. Treat as a pre-purchase check, not a documented defect.
- Pallet Pool fault cluster: One owner of a new EC-400 PP reported a cluster of faults: "Pallet changer door problems, tool changer door brackets fell off allowing arm to smash into the lower door, tools stick in the spindle if run for more than 30 minutes... high pressure pump periodically does not work (welded tools, no coolant)... chip augers had to be replaced." Presented as one extreme case, not typical (another poster: "This never ever happens with Haas, ever, as a rule"), but a checklist of what to inspect on a used pallet-pool machine.
